Pippa Cunningham works exclusively en plein air, translating the immediacy of place into bold, fluid compositions that capture the essence of her surroundings. Her practice centers on the direct encounter between artist and landscape, where color and movement become vehicles for experiencing the world's inherent vibrancy.

Born and raised on the Welsh coast, Cunningham's work is deeply informed by her relationship to place. After twenty-five years in London and Brighton, her return to rural Wales has generated a body of work that examines landscape through both intimate familiarity and renewed perspective. This dual vision — simultaneously native and foreign — imbues her paintings with a distinctive sense of wonder and belonging.

Travel extends this investigation of place, with recent works from the Côte d'Azur demonstrating her ability to distill foreign environments into their essential visual language. Working outdoors in challenging conditions, Cunningham edits and condenses her observations in real-time, creating paintings that communicate her immediate response to light, atmosphere, and terrain. Her paintings serve a deeper exploration of how we perceive and connect with the natural world.

Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1994, she has been commissioned by diverse clients including Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, The Royal Bank of Scotland and Marie Curie Cancer Care. Her Louis Vuitton work included the 2008 Cruise Collection, where her paintings became prints and designs across fashion, scarves, jewellery and leather goods. This collaboration continued in 2011 with the Ailleurs Collection of bags, accessories and ready-to-wear prints. With private collectors including Leslie Waddington and Paco Pena, Pippa's paintings have earned her a loyal following.

‘Pippa Cunningham's paintings are a celebration of the landscapes, cities and sea coasts that she visits. Painted in gouache directly from life, their glowing colours convey the fascination - and sheer delight - that she has discovered in her journeys through southern Europe, India, Asia and around Britain.’ - David Tress
